Westerschouwen Forestry

Westerschouwen Forestry

It will only take you a quarter of an hour to cycle to Westerschouwen Forestry from Ginsterveld. A 330 ha nature reserve with lots of opportunities for recreation. Most of the area is freely accessible. Explore the area on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, it's all possible. Wheelchair users  can use the special path made of stones. Further more you'll find picnic tables, bicycle parking , information tablets, a hide and two viewing towers. The forestry borders the beach partly, so after having walked or cycled all morning you could be going to the beach to walk against the wind for pleasure(uitwaaien).

Bunkers

Bunkers

On Schouwen-Duiveland you will still find many bunkers from the Second World War. The headquarters was located in the 'Slotbos Haamstede'. The coastal bunkers have almost all been lost or are buried under the high dunes. Haamstede glider airfield used to be a refuge port where motorized aircraft and scheduled services flew. The bunkers around the glider airfield served to defend it.

'Krekengebied Ouwerkerk'

'Krekengebied Ouwerkerk'

This creek area was formed after the dyke breach in 1953. The four enormous caissons that were used to close the dyke are still present. The 'Watersnoodmuseum' is located in the caissons. Almost half of the creek area consists of water. The 'Grote Kreek' is now located where the inlay used to be. Here you can swim in the creek or sunbathe along the banks of the creek. Canoeing is possible on the large creek. If you want to fish in the creek, you must be in possession of a sport fishing license and a special seasonal, weekly or day permit for the Ouwerkerk creek area. In the Creeks area, the Forestry Commission has marked two walking routes with red and white pile heads. The Creeks Route (red pile heads) is 8 kilometers long. For a shorter walk of 2.5 kilometers, follow the Oostkreekroute (white pole heads). For cyclists and horse riders, a path of approximately 2 kilometers has been constructed that leads right through the creek area from the 'Stelweg' to the small beach on the 'Oosterschelde'.
